Letter from the Managing Editor

Andy Boden, Managing Editor

Hello everyone, and welcome back to school.  This is my last semester serving as managing editor of The Flip Side, so let’s make it a good one.

The Flip Side is an alternative publication of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire that is dedicated to providing the campus and the Eau Claire community with an outlet for free expression.  We publish all kinds of material, such as articles, short stories, artwork, poetry, prose, and anything else protected by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.  We believe in having an open marketplace of ideas to serve the greater purpose of encouraging people to learn from one another by being open to ideas and engaging in dialogue, which is especially valuable to a university.  You will not find a publication as unique or as special as The Flip Side at many other college campuses across the country.

To catch you all up on the current happenings with our publication, I will let you all know of a recent change that The Flip Side has undergone.  While word limits in articles have remained that same at 400-1500 words and articles written in response to those articles also remain at 400-1500, counter-response articles have been allowed to increase.  Instead of the previous 200 word maximum, counter-response articles will now be 200-500 words in length.  This will give the authors a greater opportunity to respond to their critics more sufficiently, and will give everyone a greater opportunity to engage in a more substantive dialogue.  For the sake of avoiding confusion, letters to the editor, which are written by individuals that are directed at The Flip Side instead of any particular author, will remain at a maximum of 350 words.

If you have any other questions relating to The Flip Side, feel free to read the inside cover page of every issue, ask any staff member in person or e-mail, check out our website at www.flipsidepress.org, or reference the Letter from the Managing Editor in the first issue of this year ( Volume 7 issue1, which can also be found online).

In closing, I would like to say that it has been a privilege serving you all as managing editor of this publication.  I have found great enjoyment in the job and feel that it has been incredibly beneficial.  I look forward to see what new articles, illustrations, stories, and poems that will come our way this semester, as well as the Second Annual Flip Side Awards at the end of the year.  Thank you, and have a great semester.
