A Poetic Device
Colleen Carhuff
Undergraduate/Creative Writing
I want to write you something
that means more than it is.
More than the sky on the horizon,
more than the dream you had last night,
more than just a poem.
Not just a
stream
of words
that sound
cool
or reflective
with enjambment.
The problem is what you
make of it.
Am I just
words
to you?
Can I Talk to You?
Griffin Paul
Undergraduate
I'm sure one day I'll have a son, regardless
of my thoughts of child-rearing now.
I'll see as he grows, the things he thinks
and says will grow deeper and infinitely
more complex.
Wonderful beautiful things to hear from a
being that is half my creation.
Sitting and listening to him form words,
unsure of what he really means to say.
And then there's me, unsure how to answer
his most important questions.
Those same ideas that I likely thought,
forgot, and got away with losing, if only
by chance, in my early years.
All of those thoughts blended together in
a giant pot, overcooked and over seasoned;
too much riding on forgettable concepts.
We don't die from lack of knowledge directly,
but life always kicks you in the ass
when you're hurting most.
Knowing how to make fire doesn't seem
important when you've always had a torch
nearby, but how to talk to a girl, or anyone
really, could be all consuming to the
young man before me.
The one I should be teaching is the same
one who will teach another eventually.
So my words do hold weight, and realizing
that makes the difference in him realizing
himself.
I Always Thought
Matt Novacek
Undergraduate/History
i always thought life would play out
but i was wrong
so i scream and shout
here this was meant to be
only to realize i couldn't see
see the faces with the lies
no longer hellos, only good-byes
i always thought that i was in the right
but i failed to know
where the truth was, the light
so with eyes wide open
gaining knowledge, i'm knowin
there's more to life than you think
more than the smoke and the drink
i always thought that the bad would fall
only to find out
that we hear a call
and now happy and excited i walk
what i know of the truth, i will talk
of the love, hope and virtue
because now i know what is true
